Air New Zealand offers an Unaccompanied Minors (UM) service for children
traveling alone on flights between New Zealand and Australia.
Here's a comprehensive overview:
Eligibility by Age
Under 5 years: Not permitted to travel alone. Must be accompanied by an adult
aged 15 or older.
Air New Zealand
Ages 5–11: Can travel unaccompanied on selected routes but must use the
Unaccompanied Minor service, which includes the Airband™ tracking system.
Ages 12–16: May travel alone without the UM service or opt into it at the
parent/guardian's discretion.
Service Fees (Per Child, One-Way)
International flights (e.g., New Zealand ↔ Australia):
• Booked in advance: AUD $80
• Booked at the airport: AUD $120
Note: Booking the UM service at the airport incurs higher fees. It's advisable
to arrange this service during the initial booking process.
Airband™ Digital Tracking
Air New Zealand provides the Airband™ wristband for unaccompanied minors,
offering real-time updates to up to five nominated contacts at key journey
points:
Check-in confirmation
Boarding
• Arrival and handover to ground staff
• Pickup by the designated guardian
Route Restrictions
Unaccompanied minors are allowed on:
• Single-sector international flights between New Zealand and Australia.
• One same-day domestic New Zealand connection in addition to the international
flight.
Note: For itineraries involving multiple carriers, the child must be checked in
only for the Air New Zealand flight, and a parent or guardian must be available
to deliver and receive the child at both ends.
Check-In & Documentation
Check-in at Special Assistance counters is required.
Allow an extra 20 minutes for processing.
Bring valid photo ID for the guardian and all necessary travel documents for the
child, including passport and visas.
Drop-Off & Pick-Up
Provide contact details for both drop-off and pick-up guardians during booking.
These contacts will receive Airband™ updates and must present valid ID at the
airport.
