When flying with American Airlines from Australia, such as from
Sydney Airport (SYD)
or Brisbane Airport
(BNE), baggage allowances depend on the fare type, destination, and frequent
flyer status.
Checked Baggage
For most international flights departing Australia (typically to the U.S. via
connections), Economy Class passengers are allowed one free checked bag,
weighing up to 23 kg (50 lbs) and measuring no more than 158 cm (62 in) in total
dimensions.
Premium Economy, Business, and First Class travelers are entitled to two or more
free bags, with increased weight limits—32 kg (70 lbs) per bag for premium
cabins.
Carry-On Baggage
Passengers may bring one carry-on bag (max size: 56 x 36 x 23 cm) and one
personal item (e.g., handbag or laptop case) onboard. These items must fit in
the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.
Excess and Overweight Baggage
Excess baggage fees apply for extra bags, oversized, or overweight luggage. From
Australia, additional bag charges start around USD $100-$200 per bag, depending
on weight and route. Overweight bags (23 - 32 kg) incur an added fee. Bags over
32 kg are not accepted in Economy.
AAdvantage® and Oneworld Elite Status
Elite members, such as AAdvantage Platinum or Oneworld Sapphire tier holders,
receive additional baggage benefits, such as one or more extra free checked
bags.
