American Airlines offers an Unaccompanied Minor (UM) service to ensure the
safety and comfort of children traveling alone on international flights from
Australian airports such as
Sydney Airport (SYD)
or Brisbane Airport
(BNE).
Age Requirements
Children under 5 years old are not permitted to travel alone under any
circumstances.
Children aged 5 to 7 may travel only on nonstop or direct flights operated
solely by American Airlines. UM service is mandatory.
Children aged 8 to 14 may travel on nonstop and connecting flights, provided the
connections occur only through designated hub airports. UM service remains
mandatory.
Youth aged 15 to 17 may travel alone without the UM service, but the service can
be requested optionally for added peace of mind.
Service Fee
A service fee of USD $150 (each way) applies for the UM service. This fee covers
up to two children traveling on the same booking.
Booking and Documentation
Unaccompanied Minor reservations must be made by phone. Parents or guardians
must provide identification, contact information, and complete a UM form before
departure. A birth certificate or passport may be required to verify age.
At the Airport
The accompanying adult must escort the child to the departure gate, wait until
the flight departs, and ensure an authorized adult meets the child at the
destination with valid ID.
American Airlines staff supervise the child throughout their journey, including
during flight connections, to ensure a smooth and secure experience.
